The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is currently working to recycle EBR-II spent fuel as part of a larger effort to make high-assay low-enriched uranium, commonly referred to as HALEU, more accessible to reactor developers to test and demonstrate their designs.

Earlier this year, the TerraPower Natrium Support Program at INL completed its first examination of irradiated experimental fuel sent from the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF) to the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR).

NRIC is coordinating INL activities necessary for irradiation testing of a new fuel form from BWXT: uranium nitride tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fuel.

Representatives from the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) recently visited Abilene Christian University to tour the school’s Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing Laboratory (NEXT Lab).
