Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments

The National Reactor Innovation Center’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (NRIC-DOME) test bed is purpose-built to accelerate the development of advanced nuclear reactor technologies— offering a one-of-a-kind environment where experimental reactors can safely go critical for the first time.

Constructed around the containment system of the decommissioned Experimental Breeder Reactor-II, the DOME provides developers with a safe, controlled environment to test their experimental reactors up to 20 megawatts thermal — using high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) — to gather valuable empirical data for reactor optimization, safety analysis, and other outputs necessary to advance towards commercial deployment. Backed by NRIC’s end-to-end reactor testing ecosystem, developers have expert support from initial design through testing and decommissioning, significantly reducing the time and cost of bringing advanced nuclear reactor technologies to market.
