Molten Salt Thermophysical Examination Capability (MSTEC)

Once complete in early 2025, the MSTEC hot cell will be one of the first facilities in the world capable of examining irradiated molten salt, both for molten salt reactors and pyroprocessing of used nuclear fuel. The data from testing salts in MSTEC’s argon atmosphere will support the design, licensing and operation of molten-salt reactors. MSTEC will also provide researchers with a space for laboratory-scale pyrochemical experiments using transuranic elements.
